Area codes 514 and 438
Area code 514 is a telephone area code that covers all of Montreal Island, Île Perrot, and Île Bizard in the province of Quebec. Area code 514 was one of the 86 original North American Numbering Plan Areas defined in 1947. At that time, it was used to cover the western half of the province, but, in 1957, it was reduced to the region surrounding Montreal (the rest became area code 819; the final boundary change occurred in 1998 when area code 450 was created from the areas away from those regions. It overlays the new area code 438 beginning on November 4, 2006, as part of the change to mandatory ten-digit dialing, according to the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA).
Area code 438 was considered for overlaying 450 as well, but a later decision determined that 579 would be the overlay code for that area.[1]
